A Friday Five for The Nomads

By Oxford City FC

Oxford City Nomads 5-1 Longlevens

Oxford City Nomads enjoyed an excellent night under the floodlights at Marsh Lane, comfortably dispatching Longlevens FC in a 5-1 victory.

The Nomads made a perfect start as Siyanda Gila's early header was swiftly followed by an opener from Connor Mattimore, the forward well placed to receive a square pass from Sami Khawaja for a simple tap-in.

Dave Merrick looked to respond for Longlevens with a promising effort from range which narrowly beat the far post, but this was quickly outdone by Liam Talboys' curling finish from the edge of the area.

It could have been three for the Nomads with barely a quarter of an hour played. A mixup between the goalkeeper and his defence saw a backpass dangerously overhit, the resulting clearance falling to Khawaja whose first time effort beat the stranded 'keeper only to be cleared by a backtracking defender.

Khawaja turned provider once more in the 32nd minute, once again getting to the byline to play the ball across goal with Will McEachran the recipient of an easy finish.

Longlevens threatened a resurgence towards the end of the half thanks to Myron Turner's volleyed finish in the 40th minute, but The Nomads struck again before half time. This time it was Khawaja's turn to get his name on the scoresheet, rounding the 'keeper to slot home with a minute of the first period remaining.

The second half failed to live up to the first in terms of goals. Bradley Singh looked favourite to score as he beat 'keeper Ash Wintle to a long ball, seeing his 40-yard lob hacked off of the line. A quickly taken free kick looked to go one better but fell just wide of the target.

Substitute Jordi Ngathe did well to advance down the right, cutting in to shoot just wide of the far post.

The Nomads finally added a fifth in the 89th minute. Gila lined up a free kick from the edge of the area, picking out the unguarded side of the net with a powerful finish.

The football continues at Marsh Lane tomorrow afternoon, as the First Team welcome Bognor Regis Town in the Fourth Qualifying Round of the FA Cup, 3pm kick-off.
