Matt Paterson's 21st goal of the season saw Oxford City progress into the final of the Oxfordshire Senior Cup as they overcame near neighbours Oxford United 1-0 at Marsh Lane on Tuesday evening.
The first half was a rather even affair with both sides getting forwards without really creating anything clear-cut. City came close in the fourth minute as Godfrey Poku made his way forward through a number of challenges before squaring to Sam Nombe, who uncharacteristically fired well over the bar.
United's best chance of the half came on 41 minutes. A cross field ball from Canice Carroll found Malachi Napa who took a touch inside before firing towards the top corner, his effort however taking a deflection off of a City man before dropping just wide of the post.
Paterson had the first clear cut chance of the second half on 67 minutes when he received the ball from Ezra Forde, his powerful effort just drifting wide of the post.
He only had to wait four more minutes to grab his goal though. The ball was delivered to him and he found himself with space just outside the D before shooting from distance past Niall Clayton to give the Hoops the lead.
He was close to doubling his and his side's tally in the 74th minute. This time he cut onto his left foot, his shot deflected narrowly wide of the post.
The lead saw Mark Jones make all three of his substitutions in quick succession. Firstly, goalscorer Paterson was replaced by Reece Fleet, before he gave debuts to Tobias London and Tom Carter as they replaced Ezra Forde and Connor Stevens.
Sam Nombe had an opportunity to wrap the result up with 10 minutes remaining. He was played through into the box, however his shot across goal was brilliantly kept out by Clayton.
United did have one final chance to take the match to extra time in the second added minute. A cross from Graham Bryan found the head of Owen James, however he was unable to direct his header goalwards.
City will go on to face the winner of next week's other semi-final between Banbury United and Kidlington in the final, venue and date to be announced in due course.
