Mark Jones was unable to hide his delight at breaking the news that Matt Paterson has agreed terms with the club to stay on for the 2018/19 campaign, following his hugely successful first season at the club.
The City boss said:
"It is really good news as we were delighted with Matt’s contribution in his first season. We’ve been talking a lot over the last few weeks and has had offers from clubs at the same level and above, but he feels that he wants to stay with us. He likes the way that we play, and he enjoyed it in his first season with us.
It’s good news for the club, and Matt is committed and wants to help us improve next year."
Matt netted 27 times for City in all competitions in his first season, 21 of these coming in the league. It was, however, his six in the cup competitions that will be remembered for years to come.
After his goal saw City into the FA Cup First Round Proper for the first time in 9 years, he then created club history at Colchester. In scoring the only goal of the game, he saw his side through to the Second Round for the first time since 1969/70, whilst also recording a first ever competitive victory against Football League opposition.
His cup heroics didn’t end there as he inspired City to their first Oxfordshire Senior Cup victory since 2003. His goal against Oxford United in the Semi-Final saw them to the final against Kidlington, before he sparked City’s impressive comeback from 2-0 down to run out eventual 5-3 winners.
Everyone at the club would like to congratulate, and wish all the best to Matt and his new wife following their marriage today.
