Under 18's win 3-1
Oxford City Ladies Under 18's played their first game of 2016, and came away with a 3-1 home win against Moretonville.
On a cold frosty morning, City entertained Moretonville for their first game since December 12th. The pitch was given the go ahead at the last minute. Moretonville coped better with the hard tricky surface in the early stages and can count themselves unlucky not to go ahead after missing a couple of glorious chances, plus some last ditch tackling from City's player of the match, Isabella Richards. City really struggled to get their free flowing football game going, but against the run of play they did take the lead with a counter attacking goal on 22 minutes. Rosie McCabe's fine pass sent Kiera Isaac down the right wing, she cut inside her marker, and her deflected shot wrong footed the Moretonville keeper to put City 1-0 up. The game was still very tight, and could have gone either way, but on 36 minutes City doubled their lead, as great work from Isaac set up Ellie Larkin to tap home, and give City a 2-0 lead. This seemed to settle City down, and they began to take control of the game.
At half-time City made 5 changes to try and freshen things up, and the changes and the pitch finally thawing, City started to finally play the football that they have been playing all season. However 10 minutes into the 2nd half as City ere threating to kill the game off, Moretonville got themselves back into the game with a freak goal, as they scored direct from a corner with the ball somehow squeezing in between Iona Smith & keeper Lucy Hunter at the near post. City though didn't let this affect them, and had numerous chances to go 3-1 up, but finally got the break through on 74 minutes after good play from Iona Smith down the right side, slotted the ball into the box to the lively Lauren Page, who held the ball up, and laid the ball back to the impressive Sarah Harrison who fired an unstoppable shot into the top corner from the edge of the box to give City a bit of breathing space again. City could have added more to really kill the game off, but some good keeping and stern defending from Moretonville ensured the game finished Oxford City 3 Moretonville 1.
City were not at their best, and were a bit rusty from the long lay off, but can just be glad of the 3 points, and can now really look forward to the next 2 huge games in the next fortnight with 2 away fixtures to Swindon Town and Winchester City.
