City shoot down Stars
Oxford City Under 18's continued their impressive start to the season with a 12-0 win away to Summertown Stars in the League Cup 1st Round.
This game was played in horrendous conditions, but this didn't seem to have any effect on the City girls, as they still managed to play some fantastic free flowing football against a dogged Summertown team. The first 15 minutes were quite scrappy, as the girls tried to adjust to the difficult conditions, but they got their breakthrough on 18 minutes, as a screamer from 25 yards from Sarah Harrison got City on their way. This goal settled City, and they began to really take dominance of the game, and on 29 minutes Molly Lygo went on a mazy run, and got brought down in the box, giving the ref no option but to point to the spot. Courtney Sumner stepped up and dually despatched the penalty to put City 2-0 up. 5 minutes before half-time, and Lygo got herself on the score sheet, as Rosie McCabe's great wing play and cross set Lygo up to slot home at the far post. Then right on the stroke of half-time, Sumner got her 2nd and City's 4th as she slotted home from close range. City were pleased to go in at half-time 4-0 up in difficult conditions, and also kicking up the slope.
Kiera Isaac & Dara Austin came on at half-time, and it was Austin who set up the 5th 5 minutes in to the 2nd half with a great run down the right wing and her crossed was finished clinically by Lauren Page at the near post. The other sub Isaac then also made an impact with a quick fire hat-trick on 66, 71 & 74 minutes. The first a bullet header from Ellie Larkin's excellent corner, the 2nd an absolute bullet of a shot from 25 yards that hit the underside of the bar and went in. The 3rd a poachers finish at the far post after good work from Harrison. 78 minutes an Page got her 2nd with a smart finish to put City 9-0 up. McCabe then got on the score sheet on 87 minutes with a fantastic individual goal and finish. City were still not finished and went 11-0 up a minute later, as Issac got her 4th of the game with another fantastic finish. They then finished the scoring on 90 minutes, as Sumner completed her hat-trick with a tap in at the far post to make the final score 12-0.
Another top performance from the girls to keep their 100% winning start to the season intact. Although a great start to the season, you can say it really starts from next week, as we have 5 weeks of really tough fixtures coming up starting next week with Swindon Town (Home), then followed by Winchester City (Home), Milton United (Home), Winchester City (Away) & Northampton Town (Home). With key players Shelley Knight & Lara Althorp only 1-2 weeks away from recovering from their injuries, the squad will be right back to it's strongest, and ready for the challenge ahead in the coming weeks.
A mention also today to our ex keeper Freya Mowbray, who was a key member of this team from when we first started as under 9's right up until last season. Today she played for Summertown, and produced some outstanding saves to keep the score down to 12, and had no chance with any of the 12 goals.
