Report - Oxford City 3-0 Luton Town XI
A first pre-season win for City
Oxford City recorded their first win of their pre-season schedule as they ran out 3-0 winners against a Luton Town XI that included a mix of their U18’s side and young professionals, including Frankie Musonda who played for the Hoops on loan from Luton last season.
Mark Jones made just one change to the side that started against Oxford United on Saturday, Reece Fleet replacing Josh Ashby in the centre of midfield.
City started the game brightly and forced a first save out of Harry Isted on six minutes. A cleverly worked corner routine was passed around the edge of the box, before being delivered to the far post where Ben Jefford could only head at the young Luton stopper.
It was the 25th minute before the deadlock was broken. Jefford was involved once again as a cross found its way to Eddie Jones, who in turn fed Kabongo Tshimanga who placed his shot into the far corner of the net from a wide angle to score his second goal of pre-season.
Ten minutes later, and the lead was doubled in rather unfortunate circumstances for the visitors. An out swinging corner from Rob Sinclair struck the back of Drew Richardson on the edge of the six-yard box, taking it towards goal where Isted unable to get enough of a hand to the ball to prevent it from going over the line.
City were able to keep up their pressure in the early stages of the second period, and added a third goal just four minutes in. Jones was able to play the ball inside to Fleet who crossed to an unmarked Jefford at the far post to head past Isted.
It could have been four just a minute later as last season’s top scorer, Matt Paterson, powerfully struck his shot 30 yards out and had Isted well beaten, however he saw his effort crash off the crossbar.
Fleet then went close on 57 minutes, his curling effort towards the bottom corner from outside the box was brilliantly saved by Isted who was able to push the ball out wide.
Mark Jones rang the changes on 66 minutes as he made seven changes to his side. It was shortly after this that the young Luton side had their best chance of the match. Josh Neufville burst into the City box down the right-hand side, however his effort towards Craig King’s near post was only able to hit the side netting.
Oxford City continue their pre-season on Saturday as they welcome Chesham United to Marsh Lane for their final home friendly.
