Report - Havant & Waterlooville 3-2 Oxford City
City Leave Hampshire Empty Handed
A battling performance was not enough as Oxford City were unable to back up Saturday’s win in a 3-2 loss away at Havant & Waterlooville on Tuesday night.
Strikes from former Hawks Godfrey Poku and Matt Paterson, from the penalty spot, brought City level twice, however goals from Theo Lewis and a Matt Tubbs brace ensured the three points stayed in Hampshire.
Tubbs opened the scoring on 9 minutes as he earned possession and managed to squeeze an effort, from a tight angle on the right hand edge of the six yard box, under debutant keeper Luke Sanders.
City reacted well and forced Ryan Young into action on 23 minutes. A Reece Fleet shot from close range was well palmed behind for a corner, before Freddie Grant headed the set piece into the Hawks’ stopper’s arms.
Their best chance of the half came in the 44th minute. Rob Sinclair beat the offside trap and found himself 1-on-1 with Young however his lofted effort over the ‘keeper drifted wide of the post.
City were, however, level just six minutes into the second period. Godfrey Poku in space in the centre of the park let off a speculative effort from 25 yards which Young let squeeze under his body to level the scores.
Parity only lasted for four minutes though as Theo Lewis put the hosts back ahead as he beat Sanders to a lofted ball and headed into the unguarded net.
This only lasted a further four minutes as Zac McEachran was felled in the box and referee Ian Fissenden pointed to the spot. Matt Paterson stepped up and placed his effort under the diving Young.
It wasn’t until the 78th minute that the Hawks scored what turned out to be the winner. A free kick floated into the far side of the box was played back into the centre for Tubbs for the easiest of tap ins.
City’s hopes of forcing an equaliser were dealt a blow as Reece Fleet was dismissed seven minutes from time. The midfielder was shown a straight red card for shoving an opponent to the floor.
Despite this, the Hoops were agonisingly close to nicking a point right at the end. Freddie Grant’s superb cross found a sliding Ezra Forde at the far post, however the substitute striker was unable to get a strong enough toe to it to guide into the net.
