Report - Oxford City Nomads 3-1 Woodley United
Nomads progress in the FA Vase
Oxford City Nomads progressed to the Second Qualifying round of The FA Vase following a comfortable 3-1 victory over Woodley United.
The visitors took an early lead through James Tennant, the forward beating the onrushing Ben Taylor to a through ball and slotting into an empty net.
The Nomads got back on the attack immediately, winning a corner which Sammi Khawaja headed narrowly wide, but had Taylor to thank for a good save at the other end after a quarter of an hour.
The equaliser arrived in the 23rd minute, Woodley failing to deal with another corner and allowing Jordi Mulvany to steal in for a simple finish.
Less than 10 minutes later the Nomads were ahead, a simple ball down the middle seeing Sami Khawaja poke past Alex Reed. He could have doubled the lead shortly after as he latched onto a long ball down the left, rounding the 'keeper but failing to convert at the near post.
The pace of the game slowed either side of half time but The Nomads brought things back into life just after the hour mark. A low, driven cross from Matt Knapton picked out Jack Tutton at the far post: the midfielder poked home only to see the assistant's flag raised for offside. Jordan Lee's well-struck effort a minute later forced a good save from Reed at his near post.
The game was finally put beyond reasonable doubt in the 80th minute when sustained pressure resulted in substitute Henry Landers, who bagged an impressive 4 goals for the Under 18s on Monday night, wriggling through a sea of players to strike into the far bottom corner.
The final 10 minutes lacked goals but were still rich in action. A two footed lunge from Idris Kamara went unpunished before Taylor saw a curling effort around his far post. Stoppage time yielded one last chance for the hosts as substitute Connor Mattimore found time and space on the left side of the area to curl a shot for the far top corner which floated inches over the bar.
Nomads: Taylor, Godwin-Malife (Landers 66), Knapton, Gibbens, Mulvany, Bestley, Tutton, Collins (Da Silva 57), Khawaja, Singh (Mattimore 82).
