ARCHIE MATTHEWS | I'VE REALLY ENJOYED IT SO FAR

It was a debut to remember for new goalkeeper Archie Matthews on Saturday.

After signing on loan from Swansea City on Friday, City’s new stopper put in a man of the match performance to help his new team gain a point, saving a penalty in the process.

Alongside impressive goalkeeper Ben Dudzinski, Matthews will battle for the number one shirt this season and did himself no harm with a string of impressive saves in the game.

Furthermore, his debut performance landed him a place in the non-league paper’s famed team of the day and Matthews heaped the praise on his teammates for digging deep to secure a point.

“I’ve really enjoyed it so far.” Said Matthews

“It was a tough game today, the conditions weren’t great but the lads stuck together and got through it well.

“It’s been really good [to play in the game], I’ve not had the most games this season and it’s part of the reason I’m here to get this experience and enjoyable to get ninety minutes in.

“The lads did really well under the pressure, everyone really dug in and fought for the point so it was really good.

“I’m only a couple of days in so I’ve only got to know the squad briefly but it’s been really good and the team look like a good bunch as well.”

Looking back at Saturday’s game, the result hinged on a number of key decisions, one of those being the penalty save, and Matthews shed some light on how he approached the vital moment.

“I didn’t particularly know where he was going to go but I saw one of his last goals was a penalty and saw that he went that way.

“I just tried to cover as much space as possible and make myself as big as possible. Part of it is just luck and guessing the right way.

“In the moment you’re not exactly enjoying it too much [the constant pressure] but after looking back at it, it’s part of the reason I’ve come on loan and looking back on it is really enjoyable.”
