Jenkins "We stood up to the challenge"

Jul 13, 2022

City boss Ross Jenkins was delighted with his side's showing in the Hoops' 0-0 draw with League One side Wycombe Wanderers on Tuesday night.

Playing behind closed doors at the Chairboys' training ground, City were impressive throughout the ninety minutes and came close to notching ahead through striker Joe Iaciofano.

Welsh international Sam Vokes came close for the hosts in the last half hour but the Hoops defended astutely to keep their first clean-sheet of pre-season.

Speaking after the game, Jenkins expressed his delight with how the squad applied themselves.

“I thought it was a brilliant performance.” Jenkins told oxfordcityfc.co.uk .

“I thought it was a really competitive game and they (Wycombe) applied themselves really well and challenged us. I thought we were brilliant in spells, we worked really hard out of possession and played some nice football in possession.

“Wycombe came out and applied themselves early on and it set the tone a little bit. They’ve got some good quality and they’re strong, powerful and move the ball around really well and we had to deal with that and it was a big test.

“We stood up to their challenge and the 0-0 was reflective of how we played. There were a few chances at either end but I think overall from both teams it was a really dogged performance."

“It’s not always about the result in pre-season, I said before the game, I don’t care if we win, lose or draw - it’s more about the team and seeing the connections form around the pitch."

Once again, Jenkins chose to blood some of City's U23 players in the friendly. Latrell Humphrey-Ewers, Niko Nenomen-Millar, Dan Stokoe, Luke Stokoe and Andre Bromfield all featured in the second-half and Jenkins was full of praise with their performances.

“I thought it was really good to see some of the young boys playing as well. We do want to phase those young boys in slowly and I think they were a credit to the club.

“I’ve told them that it’s only one game and they need to build on that. They're up against strong competition and they applied themselves really well.

"From the outside looking in, you wouldn’t have known if they were an U23 player or a first team squad member.

“That 25-minute spell will give them a lot of confidence but it is only one game and it’s important that they learn from what they’re playing against, as Wycombe have real quality in their team.

“Overall from the young boys up to the senior boys that was a really good shift and we’ll take a lot of positives out of that."
