Oxford City progressed in the SRWFL Cup, with a 6-0 victory away from home against Andover New Street.
First half goals from Angie Dunbar-Bonnie, on her first start, Yasmin Edwards, and Ellie White saw the Hoops storm to a 3-0 lead, with Parsons and a double from Ashby in the second half confirming a dominant victory.
An even opening five minutes of the clash saw both teams in search of the early advantage, with corners for both sides proving difficult to defend, but ultimately nothing really threatened either keeper.
That was until a ball into the box was chased down by Edwards, with Cherie Connolly in Andover’s net getting there first on seven minutes, but only pushing the ball as far as Lester, who passed home. She looked up to see the offside flag raised, however, and the teams remained level.
No bother, however, as City had their opener shortly after. It was an excellent low ball from White, delivered across the goalmouth on 13 minutes, which allowed for Dunbar-Bonnie to tap over the line at the back post.
Then, a period followed where it was one-way traffic, with the Hoops determined to get their second. In that, Edwards had a one-on-one effort with Andover’s keeper, which she couldn’t keep down, whilst, moments later, Dunbar-Bonnie went close to her second, with Connolly doing well to get a glove to the close-range effort.
A quick-fire double, the first in the 28th minute and the second on 30, then saw the Hoops extend their advantage to three. The first came as Edwards, once again, found herself one-on-one with the keeper, this time making no mistake as she placed an effort into the bottom right corner. Involved again, it was Edwards who created goal number three, as she used her strength to hold off the Andover defence and deliver low, with White firing City to a comfortable lead.
The Hoops continued to dominate, limiting Andover to rare efforts from range, and rooting much of the play in the hosts half, but time ran out before City could add to the half-time scoreline, seeing them in at the half with a healthy three-goal lead.
Half-time: Andover New Street 0-3 Oxford City
City started the second half brightly, with Prescott-Luke and Parsons both seeing efforts met by Connolly in the opening five minutes. The Hoops continued to push on, with Parsons netting on 57 minutes to make it four. Receiving the ball on the edge of the box, she turned her defender, and calmly slotted into the far corner.
City continued to look the far brighter side, not giving the Andover defence a moment to breath, with plenty of efforts blocked by the home backline. Harris went the closest on 62 minutes, with a strike from an awkward angle which left the crossbar shaking.
After seeing numerous more efforts blocked by the home defence, Ashby found her way through with a late addition to the scoreline. It was a quick move forward in the 80th minute that saw Harris set to Ashby, with the latter firing home from the goalmouth in City’s fifth.
A determined City side continued to threaten, with both Walecki and White seeing strong efforts saved as the game ticked over the 90, with the Hoops netting one more before full time. It was a lovely delivery from Whistler, with a cheeky touch from Ashby guiding an effort into the net in the 5th minute of injury time, rounding off the scoring and confirming a job well done for the Hoops. On to the next one!
