MATCH REPORT: Dulwich Hamlet 0-2 Oxford City

Apr 09, 2022

Goals in the second-half from Zac McEachran and Joe Iaciofano secured three points for the Hoops, as Oxford City beat Dulwich Hamlet 2-0 at Champion Hill.

The win extends City’s hold in the play-offs to ten points after the win against fellow play-off hopefuls.

Ross Jenkins opted to hand Hamzad Kargbo a full debut after his cameo appearance against Dartford at the weekend.

Over 3,300 fans squeezed into Champion Hill for the game and they were treated to a exceptionally entertaining affair.

The game was probably best summed up by the first chances of the game on four minutes. Ronnie Vint had a good chance to open the scoring but he could only volley straight at Ben Dudzinski. Straight afterwards, City broke themselves when Iaciofano found McEachran at the other end of the pitch but again the effort was straight at the Goalkeeper.

Kargbo was making a nuisance of himself on his full debut for the Hoops, winning every header, flick on and sniff of the ball that came his way. His cross on 26 minutes flashed across goal and Iaciofano was inches away from applying the finishing touch.

City were attacking with intent and McEachran was applying his usual magic in the middle of the park. However, he was yet to find that extra bit of quality to find the net. Firstly, he drilled a shot wide from the edge of the box and then shot straight at the ‘keeper on the half hour mark.

However, it was the hosts who had the best chance of the half. When Andre Blackman’s cut-back found Darren McQueen on the edge of the area, the net was gaping. Everyone in Champion Hill was waiting for the net to bulge but the striker stuttered and failed to shoot, giving Harry Kyprianou the time to run across to the attacker and clear the danger.

Half-time: Dulwich Hamlet 0-0 Oxford City

The second-half started in the same fashion as the first. McEachran linked up well with Kargbo, but the striker’s eventual shot was well saved by Grainger and parried behind for a corner.

City continued to press and eventually they were rewarded six minutes after the hour mark.

The Hamlet defence kept backing away from the midfielder, so much so that McEachran managed to stroll into the area and unleash a low drive past Grainger and into the bottom corner.

Three minutes later, City doubled their lead. Nana Owusu roamed forward and slid Joe Iaciofano in on goal, leaving the striker with the simplest of finishes to curl the ball home.

City were in full flow and Vint’s heroics was the only thing that stopped a third goal. Jacob Bancroft’s fizzed cross across goal was perfect for McEachran to tap in from yards out but the Dulwich defender did well to clear the ball over the crossbar to keep the score at 2-0.

City were impressive up front but resolute at the back. The back four of Dudzinski, Zico Asare, Harry Kyprianou and Charlie Rowan were instrumental at the back, defending every attack that the hosts threw at them.

The win means City stay in sixth position in Vanarama National League South but extend the gap to the final play-off place to ten points.
