MATCH REPORT: Oxford City 2-2 Hemel Hempstead

Nov 12, 2022

Josh Parker's stunner and Aaron Williams-Bushell's second goal of the season wasn't enough for three points as City drew 2-2 with Hemel Hempstead Town in Vanarama National League South.

City had to come back from behind twice in the game after goals from Hemel's Brooklyn Illunga and Josh Castiglione either side of half-time.

Ross Jenkins made one change from Tuesday evening after a sickness bug ravaged the Hoops' side. Joe Iaciofano dropped to the bench with Alfie Potter replacing him.

It was Potter that had the first chance of the game. He took aim from outside the box but his dipped effort didn't trouble ex-City stopper Craig King.

Ben Dudzinski was called into action on twelve minutes, denying Dara Dada from close-range. Dada had the whole of the goal to aim for but City's number one did well to rush off his line and get an arm to his effort.

The chances kept coming for City as the team impressed in the first twenty minutes of the game but they were hit with a sucker punch mid-way through the first half. Brooklyn Illunga took aim at goal from the edge of the box and with a cruel deflection the shot dipped over Dudzinski and into the net.

The away side had the wind in their sails from then on and Luke Holness almost added a second with another dipping effort. However, the midfielder's effort went inches wide of the post from 25-yards out.

Seconds before going into the break behind, City salvaged an equaliser and what a goal it was! Josh Parker picked up the ball from 25-yards and drilled a ferocious shot into the side netting, leaving King with no chance. Another stunner to add to the striker's collection.

Half-time: Oxford City 1-1 Hemel Hempstead

The second-half was an end-to-end affair with both teams looking to edge ahead. However, it was the visitors who did exactly that.

Jernade Meade's cross found Castiglione inside the box and the forward drilled the ball under Dudzinski and into the net just before the hour mark. 1-2.

Despite going behind for a second time in the match, the Hoops fought back once more. Aaron Williams-Bushell did superbly to hold off his marker, turn and curl a shot past King and into the corner of the goal.

From then on, there was only one team that looked like winning the game with City throwing everything they had at the Hemel defence. King again saved his side after he tipped Josh Ashby's free-kick over the crossbar and despite a barrage of chances and crosses into the box, the away side stood strong.

The result means that City are seven games unbeaten at home in Vanarama National League South, a run that stretched back to the opening day. Next up, Dover Athletic visit the RAW Charging Stadium on Tuesday.
