MATCH REPORT | OXFORD CITY 4-0 ST ALBANS CITY

Oxford City secured promotion to the Vanarama National League for the first time in their history with a brilliant 4-0 win over St Albans City on a momentous day in the National League South Promotion Final.

Reece Fleet opened the scoring before goals from Zac McEachran, Josh Ashby and Josh Parker sealed a win that was effectively completed in the first half.

The Hoops named an unchanged Starting XI from the semi-final victory over Worthing sticking to the same setup from their semi-final triumph.

The game got off to a fast start with the Saints breaking through early on. Mitchell Weiss drove into space, but his deflected effort was denied by Chris Haigh from close range.

However, the hosts would make the breakthrough minutes later with Alfie Potter picking out McEachran in a crowded Saints box who found oncoming skipper Fleet to dispatch expertly into the bottom corner.

City went close to doubling their lead after a brilliant counter-attack ended with Parker picking out a surging McEachran at the far post but his headed effort was denied well by Berry.

However, their second came moments later after the St Albans stopper slipped with the ball at his feet gifting McEachran a simple finish to make it 2-0.

Potter was replaced halfway through the first after picking up an injury with Latrell Humphrey-Ewers being introduced in his place. The Hoops would later grab a third, this time through Josh Ashby.

A quick give-and-go between McEachran and Coyle on the left eventually found the midfielder who’s finessed effort found the bottom corner. On the brink of half-time, Ross Jenkins’ men grabbed a fourth.

Parker latched onto Humphrey-Ewers’ flick-on before feinting past Aidan Francis-Clarke slotting low past Berry to complete a devastating first half display.

Half Time: Oxford City 4 – 0 St Albans

The visitors began the second half in search of mounting an unlikely fightback in Oxford.

First-half substitute, Shaun Jeffers, wriggled away from Canice Carroll on the edge of the Hoops’ box before unleashing a swerving effort from range but Haigh palmed the shot over the bar.

City were happy to sit back in the second awaiting opportunities to hit their wounded opponents on the break with Ashby once again testing Berry but was denied on this occasion.

Substitute Joe Neal thought he’d found space in behind the City backline but a last-ditch block from Lewis Miccio denied the Saints substitute from close range.

The Hoops remained fixed on managing the game in a way which continued to restrict their opposition from creating any openings.

The story remained the same for the majority of the second half as Banton’s effort from range through a sea of bodies was read and collected by Haigh with relative ease failing to really test the Ebbsfleet United stopper.

The latter stages of the half saw introductions of Joe Wilson and Klaidi Lolos for the home side in attempts to see out the result sealing promotion to the National League.

Following a record-breaking season which saw Jenkins’ men achieve their highest points tally, the Oxfordshire club achieved promotion to the National League and can now prepare for the exciting challenge ahead next season.
