MATCH REPORT: Oxford City 5-0 Tonbridge Angels

Ethan Gough • Mar 05, 2022

Oxford City cruised to a comfortable 5-0 win over Tonbridge Angels.

City made 2 changes to the starting lineup as Matsuzaka came back into the 11 and new loanee Gatlin O’Donkor made his first appearance in a Hoops shirt. Ross Jenkins and Andy Ballard were also looking to make it 4 wins from the last 5 games, and carry on the good run of form City have found lately.

Kick-Off

The Hoops started on the front foot with the 2 wing-backs causing Tonbridge problems. In the 8th minute Ewan Clark took the ball well before laying in George Harmon in the 18 yard box, who then released a shot on his weaker right foot which drifted just past the right hand post.

Only a couple of minutes later, the duo combined once again. This time Clark sprayed the ball over the back line and into the path of Harmon. However, Jonathan Henly came rushing out of the Angels goal and handled the ball to stop the chance which saw the shot stopper see a straight red card, and in turn the Tonbridge right back had to fill in for the Angels number 1.

The resulting free-kick was right on the edge of the 18, and Josh Ashby, who hasn’t scored as many set-pieces as previous seasons, stood over the ball. He then whipped the ball with power past the make-shift goalkeeper and into the bottom right hand corner to put City ahead.
1-0

On the 20th minute mark, City won a free-kick on the opposite side of the box and once again Ashby took responsibility. High on confidence the number 4 effortlessly lifted the ball over the Tonbridge wall and into the net past the rooted Fielding, to give the Hoops their 2nd goal of the afternoon as well as Ashby’s 2nd.
2-0

Just before half-time Ashby had a golden chance to make it a hat-trick when the ball fell to him on the edge of the box following Harmon poking the ball from the keepers reach. The midfielder then only had a defender in between him and the gaping goal, but he couldn’t apply the finishing touch as he blazed over the crossbar.

HT

Just after half time City had a flurry of chances in the opposing box. Ashby played in Joe Iaciofano excellently with a defense splitting through ball, but Fielding was out well to make the save after closing him down. The rebound then fell to Ashby, who once again had a glorious opportunity to grab his 3rd, but his shot struck the right hand post. The ball then found Clark who couldn’t finish the final chance.

On the hour mark debutant Gatlin O’Donkor, who put on a fine performance on his first start for City,  added a 3rd to Hoops tally for the afternoon with a cool side footed finish into the bottom right hand corner following a rebound.
3-0

The Hoops sustained their pressure late on into the game and showed no mercy as Iaciofano grabbed the 4th. Harmon supplied a wicked cross to put it on a plate for City’s top scorer. The number 15 then lifted the ball over the keeper to make sure the 3 points were definitely City’s. 4-0

Just before the final whistle City still had enough time to make it 5 as Harmon once again whipped in an excellent cross into the danger area. The cross was then met by the youngster Clark who turned the ball in, and opened his account for City.
5-0
