MATCH REPORT: Oxford City progress to Oxfordshire Senior Cup FInal

Mar 29, 2022

Two goals from both Joe Iaciofano and Jacob Bancroft sent Oxford City through to the final of the Oxfordshire Senior Cup after a 4-1 win against North Leigh FC.

Both teams scored inside the first seven minutes when former City striker Jefferson Louis' equaliser cancelled out Joe Iaciofano's opener.

Oxford United now lie in waiting for the Hoops in the final as Ross Jenkins' side look to win their 38th Senior Cup title.

In his first interview as manager, Ross Jenkins said that one of his key aims in charge of Oxford City would be to develop players and bring through youth prospects. He stuck to his word with his team selection, naming Velocity Oxford players Latrell Humphrey and Niko Nenomen on the bench for the first time.

However, the Hoops were not to take the competition lightly, making only three changes to the side that played in the last Vanarama National League South game.

It took only five minutes for City to break the deadlock. George Harmon picked up on a loose ball deep into the North Leigh half and found Joe Iaciofano inside the penalty area. He beat the offside trap and had the time and space to fire past Millers’ Goalkeeper Adam North to open the scoring.

From the outside looking in you’d have been forgiven for thinking that City would go on to open the floodgates, however the visitors (who play two divisions below the Hoops) weren’t reading the script.

Ex-Hoops striker Jefferson Louis suddenly found himself with space outside the box and took aim at goal. His shot was too hot to handle for Hoops’ ‘keeper Ben Dudzinski and his effort crept into the bottom corner to peg City back to level terms.

Jenkins’ side weren’t to be deterred and piled the pressure on the North Leigh defence for the remainder of the half. Nana Owusu’s fizzed cross only needed the slightest touch from Joe Iaciofano to put the Hoops back ahead, but City’s leading marksman couldn’t get a toe on the cross as the ball flashed across the six-yard box.

Despite his near miss, Iaciofano was showing his class and North had to be at his best to deny him a second goal. This time he made a superb save to deny the striker when he bore down on goal in a one versus one. Somehow, he managed to get a fingertip on the striker’s effort to tip the ball behind for a corner.

However, despite Oxford’s dominance, the Millers looked threatening themselves when on the counter. Wingers Roger James and Jordan Alves were causing City problems and creating dangerous scenarios for City but couldn't turn that danger into attempts on goal.

Despite this, City continued to push before for a second before the break. Harmon’s low drive looked destined for the back of the net but a deflection from George Cash diverted the ball out for a corner to the relief of the North Leigh players.Charlie Rowan came close from the resulting corner but City couldn’t edge ahead before the interval.

Half-Time: North Leigh 1-1 Oxford City

Two minutes into the second-half, City thought they had re-taken the lead. Harmon's floated cross was met by the head of Harry Kyprianou but somehow 'keeper North pulled out a show stopping save to tip the ball over the crossbar and stop the defender from scoring.

North Leigh were defending resolutely to stay level but two minutes before the hour mark, City’s pressure finally paid off. Harmon picked out Iaciofano and just like his first goal, curled the ball round the ‘keeper to finally get City back in front.

The Millers barely had time to regroup before the Hoops made it three. Three minutes after the second, Jacob Bancroft got in on the act. He was in the right place at the right time to tap home Kyprianou’s inch-perfect cross from point-blank range and it was all but game over for the Millers.

Nevertheless, that didn’t deter the step 4 side from playing positively and searching for a second. Jordan Thomas’ shot flew inches over the bar after Louis’ cut-back found him in space.

Five minutes from time, City had their fourth goal. Bancroft produced a terrific bit of skill to leave defender Andy Gunn on the floor, before he put on the racing down the left wing, cutting inside and curling home his second of the game.

The win sends City through to the Senior Cup final where Oxford United await.
