Oxford City ramped up their pre-season preparations with a useful test against QPR Development on Tuesday night.
A sun-drenched TSG Training Centre witnessed a goal glut in the latter moments of the first-half.
A Trialist and Tom Scott grabbed the goals for Ross Jenkins' side in a competitive game against a talented Rangers side.
For the first twenty-or-so minutes, you’d have been hard pressed to see where the goals in this contest would be coming from.
There was precious little between the two sides, with the silky smooth QPR side opting for two teams to play in each half, as did Ross Jenkins.
The first goal came in the 25th minute, a mix-up at the back allowed Rangers to find their trialist #9 unmarked inside the box, and he duly applied the finish to score past a helpless Max Treml.
That goal seemed to bring the game to life, and City almost levelled via the lively Dj Campton-Sturridge. The winger cut-inside and fired a shot towards goal, but it was parried wide by QPR ‘keeper Halliday before it could find the net.
Despite that chance it was QPR who found the net again, next. City’s trialist gave a QPR attacker too much of a nudge inside the box, and the resulting penalty was duly dispatched by the host’s Alexander Aoraha.
The half that started as a snooze fest for the 100-or-so supporters at the TSG Training Ground, turned into a goal glut.
The goal of the half came ten minutes prior to the interval, when Oxford’s trialist centre-half towered above his marker from a free-kick, and looped a strong header into the net from the edge of the box.
The goals didn’t stop there either. Just as City thought they had a foothold in the game, QPR restored their two-goal cushion on 38’.
This time another trialist (the right-back) burst down the right wing and retained his composure to drill a driven shot past Treml and into the net via the post. A great finish. 3-1.
Once again though, a goal changed the outlook of the game. Tom Scott adding his name to the scoresheet, after drilling home Charlie Bacon’s cut-back from inside the box.
If City’s first goal was a straightforward ‘cross it - head it’, the second was the opposite.
Scott’s finish a perfect finishing touch to an impressive team move that was engineered by two of City’s youngsters Bacon & McConnell.
Half-Time: QPR 3-2 Oxford City
Changes at the break for both teams brought a renewed energy to a useful contest.
Jayden Carbon almost made an instant impression leading the line, but narrowly fired over the crossbar after bursting through Rangers’ back line.
City started to crank up the pressure, and quickly became the dominant team.
Jacob Roddy was denied by the outside of the woodwork after a ball flashed across the six-yard box and to his feet.
The game was played at a higher intensity, but the goal-rush of the first half faded away.
A more tentative battle took place between the sides, but neither could pick the lock.
Even when Jack Bearne was played in on goal in the 84th minute the net didn’t bulge. The lively forward forced a strong save from Halliday, and a one that kept Rangers ahead.
Ex-City loanee Rohan Vaughan could've made the scoreline look even better for QPR after a misplaced path landed at the striker's feet. However, Treml denied the striker with a solid save.
More minutes in the tank for both Hoops. We'd like to thank QPR for tonight's friendly and wish them the best of luck for the remainder of the season.
Next up for City, another good test away at Banbury United on Saturday.
