MATCH REPORT: Slough Town 2-2 Oxford City

Jan 02, 2022

George Harmon’s late strike helped secure Oxford City’s first point of 2022 in a 2-2 draw at Slough Town.

Elliot Benyon’s header in the first-half opened the scoring before Josh Jackman & Matthew Lench put Slough ahead after the interval.

City had the better of the opening exchanges. Joe Iaciofano had the ball in the net but the linesman’s flag denied him an opener. Canice Carroll also came close with a curling effort.

The deadlock was broken in the 28th minute. Josh Ashby, playing as a makeshift right-back, sent a pin-point cross into the box and Benyon duly applied the finishing touch with a neat header.

However, the first-half wasn’t without controversy. An elbow on Benyon from Slough centre-half Guy Hollis only warranted a yellow card in the opinion of the referee.

Half-Time: Slough Town 0-1 Oxford City

As in the reverse fixture on Boxing Day, Slough’s threat came from set-pieces, especially their long throw-ins and it wasn’t long until this tactic paid off.

Hollis’ long throw evaded everyone in the box, except from Josh Jackman, who steered the ball home from inside the six-yard box ten minutes after the interval.

Fifteen minutes from time, the hosts went ahead. Once again, a long throw was launched into the box which the Hoops defence failed to deal with. This time, it was Lench’s turn to tap the ball past Ben Dudzinski from close-range.

However, ten-minutes from time City grabbed a deserved equaliser. Harmon collected the ball from outside the area before bursting past the Town defence and the full-back fired his shot into the net.

Another goal from the full-back which takes his tally up to five this season.

From then on it was anybody game but it was the Hoops who went for the winner.

Canice Carroll tried his luck twice but was denied both times by the hosts’ Goalkeeper Johnathan North.

In the 90th minute Ewan Clark replaced goal scorer Benyon to make his first appearance for the club.

David Oldfield’s men start 2022 with a point and now look forward to the visit of Eastbourne Borough on Saturday.
