Oxford City Ladies FC have had a busy two weeks, progressing through two semi-finals in two weekend. The Hoops saw Abingdon United off in dramatic fashion last weekend with a stoppage time winner from new recruit Sian Riley-Philips.
Waheed was unable to be at the game due to personal commitments. Assistant Manager, Filipe Melo, stepped in to take the hot seat and was pleased with the outcome:
“We always knew it would be a difficult game, especially since we have 8 injuries in our squad. In the first half, we controlled the game and had the best chances despite Abingdon being really physical. Abingdon scored early in the second half. We had some difficulties in finding our way of play. But with the substitutions, the team's reaction was great. We really saw determination, resilience and hard graft. I am delighted that we were able to come back and win the game. All that I can say is that I’m very proud of the players and that I’m looking forward to be in the Final and to play Southampton again.”
On This Weekend
Waheed returns to manage the team against Woodley United this weekend:
“We travel to another tough game. We beat Woodley at home this season but it was a close game. They are a well-organized side who we will have to be patient against to get the result we want.”
2 Finals in 2 Weekends
After the last two weeks, Waheed is optimistic for the future:
“It is fantastic to be involved in two more finals this season. Some may expect it from us but we have had so many changes over this season that it's almost an entirely new team. I know there are clubs out there not as established as ours but our current group of players that are playing week in week out (excluding injured players) have only been together really since Christmas! We still have huge players to come back into the squad and provided we can keep picking up points as we go and build a solid base we can have a huge push at the end of the season and I am very excited for it. Things are very bright for the hoops at the moment.“
Oxford City Ladies FC return to Court Place Farm on the 31st March, welcoming Warsash Wasps.
