Oxford City picked up their second win of their pre-season schedule as a brace from Danny Rowe, complimented by a Kyran Wiltshire strike saw the Hoops run out 3-1 winners at Marsh Lane.
Most spectators watching a pre-season friendly are used to seeing debuts a-plenty with new signings and trialists getting a run out – however there was a debut off the pitch ahead of this match, with City’s brand-new scoreboard put in use for the very first time.
It didn’t have to wait long to be used for the first time either – Oxford City keeping up their record of scoring in the first ten minutes of every pre-season match to date. It wasn’t quite the third minute this time around, but the eighth minute that Finn Tapp’s long clearance found Rowe, who was able to sprint onto the ball, taking a touch before slotting past the goalkeeper.
Joe Oastler came closest to doubling the lead in the first half – his powerful header in the 27th minute was well saved down low to keep the score at just one.
The lead was doubled ten minutes into the second half. A lovely move down the right saw the ball cut back to Wiltshire just inside the box, he was able to take a touch before slotting into the far corner.
Any doubts on the result were quashed with a quarter-of-an-hour to play as Rowe picked up his second strike of the match. It was from another long ball over the top from Tapp, the winger again taking a touch before finishing cleverly past the keeper into the corner.
There was time for the visitors to get one back right at the end of the 90 minutes. This goal was also born from a long ball over the top, as Jack Bowen was able to run onto the ball and slot past Steven Caro in the City goal.
