Cordner 6'
Davies 17'

Oxford City 0

Oxford City were beaten on the road by York City under the lights at the LNER Community Stadium.

The first ever meeting between the Hoops and the Minstermen was one to forget from a City perspective, after a thunderbolt from Tyler Cordner followed by a Will Davies strike, secured the win inside twenty minutes.

SELECTION

Ross Jenkins decided to name an unchanged squad from Saturday’s 4-0 win away at Ebbsfleet. Cole Kpekawa & Alex McQueen kept their starting spots after impressive debuts.

First-Half

City were undone by a strong first half performance from the Minstermen, and it took just five minutes for them to open the scoring, when defender Tyler Cordner found the net in spectacular fashion.

He carried the ball forward from the backline and was allowed to take aim at goal from 25-yards out from goal, and his effort flew into the corner of the net despite City ‘keeper Jack Bycroft being at full stretch.

York continued to bring the game to the Hoops and on 17 minutes they doubled their lead, this time from closer range.

Will Davies evaded detection inside the six-yard box to tap home Scott Burgess’ cross. Again, Bycroft helpless to stop the effort from finding the net.

The Minstermen attempted to kill the game off before it had begun. However, Jack Bycroft did well to hold Dipo Akinyemi’s curling effort from finding the net to spare the Hoops’ blushes.

Although, Ross Jenkins’ side did seem to wake up soon after that chance, and started to remind the hosts that they were in fact in a game.

Again, York defender Cordner was in the thick of the action, defending well to block Olly Sanderson’s shot from inside the box.

Furthemore George Sykes-Kenworthy was eventually called into action just before the half hour mark. Zac McEachran took aim at goal from outside the area, but despite taking two attempts to collect the ball, the York shot-stopper did well to collect the effort.

Again the host continued to press for a third, but the Hoops had learnt their lessons and started to defend in the manner we’ve become accustomed to.

Scott Burgess sent an effort flying over the crossbar, before Max Kouhyar’s header was deflected behind from a corner after Olly Green’s effort from distance was parried away.

However, City could’ve pulled a goal back after some good work from Sanderson on the left wing. His bursting run allowed him to bare down on goal, but he opted to pick out Alex McQueen, who couldn’t find an angle to fire a shot at goal.

Half-Time: York City 2-0 Oxford City

Second-half

Ross Jenkins made a half-time change to try and turn the tide. Nya Kirby took to the field to replace Mitchell Roberts.

However, the second-half started in the same manner as the first.

York again in the ascendancy, and City struggled to land a glove on their opponents.

York substitute Lenell John-Lewis attempted an acrobatic shot towards goal, but the defensive duo of Canice Carroll and Cole Kpekawa did well to shepherd the ball away from the target.

In truth, the second-half was a rather tame affair. However, there were still half-chances for the hosts through Burgess & John-Lewis. The latter forcing another save from Bycroft.

The 58 travelling City fans had to wait until the last moments to see a last-ditch attempt on goal. Olly Sanderson, one of the Hoops’ bright sparks in the game, fired an effort at goal from just outside the box in the final few moments, which Sykes-Kenworthy did well to stop.

A disappointing evening for the Hoops. However, the team have the perfect chance to get over their disappointment against Kidderminster Harries in OX3 on Saturday.
