Women's pathway the focus after Euro success

The Lionesses’ victory in the Euros last night has meant a busy morning here at Oxford City with huge media interest in the club’s grass roots development of girls and women’s football.

Sky News, the BBC and half a dozen national and local radio and newspaper outlets have been here to talk to players, staff and the girls attending this week’s hugely popular soccer courses.

Aliyah Anthony, Head of Women’s Development at Oxford City told us:

“It’s amazing to see such interest. My phone started ringing about 7 o’clock last night with radio stations wanting to talk about women’s football and what the Lionesses’ success means at The MGroup Stadium and across Oxfordshire. That quickly became TV interest and it’s been one interview after another but that’s great: it’s a massive endorsement of what we do as a club here and the way we focus on growing the girls’ game in particular.

“This week for example we have had a girls only course which grows each time we run it, we have the Development side training, the Women’s First Team training and then all of our girls’ age group teams will be back for pre-season; we have committed to running more teams than ever this year.

“The England team are such role models and the interest they generate is incredible. Our aim has to be to give as many female footballers as possible a chance to play the game and get involved after being inspired by back to back Euro wins for the England team.”
